  • Retail cannabis stores in Mississauga? The city is asking residents for their opinion

Canadians can purchase cannabis online through the Ontario Cannabis Store, but Mississauga has yet to decide whether it will allow private retail stores. A public information session is scheduled on Nov. 26 at city hall. - Matthew Strader/Metroland

Mississauga has until Jan. 22, 2019 to decide whether it wants to opt-in or opt-out of privately operated retail cannabis stores in the community.

The City of Mississauga is weighting its options regarding cannabis retail stores and also on locations where cannabis may be prohibited on city property.

Residents are encouraged to complete an online survey or attend a public information session. The city is also using Forum Research to conduct an independent telephone survey with residents.

The public consultation regarding the legalization of recreational cannabis in Mississauga is scheduled for Monday, Nov. 26 from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Mississauga Civic Centre, in the council chambers.

Since recreational cannabis became legal in Canada on Oct. 17, 2018, the provincial government has permitted cannabis to be sold online and in private retail stores. Unlike the LCBO, these stores will not be run by the government, but like the LCBO it is under the control of the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario.

Cannabis retail for all! We need to bring as much of the cannabis industry to the private retail sector and let the business run itself. #FUCK300foranOz
